Sometimes you just have to admire the handiwork of savvy marketing. In the over-saturated specialty beverage market, coconut water is now one of the most popular drinks to fly off the shelves of health food stores.
To be sure, the health drink is really nutritious in its natural state. You don't have to add vitamins and special antioxidants to make it sell. High in potassium, it's touted as being more healthy than orange juice and is supposed to contain more electrolytes than the average sports drink.
For those who are on a perpetual diet, it's also low in calories and is fat free. No wonder those Brazilian ladies look so great in their bikinis. If you want to look like Gisele Bundchen (apparently a fan of it), you better drink up.
The taste of coconut water is a somewhat metallic, so it won't appeal to everyone. Yet there are several brands on the U.S. market to choose from. O.N.E. is aimed at healthy eaters while Zico is marketing itself to the yoga crowd. Vita Coco looks like a virtual tropical beach party within each sip.
