In the spirit of Troma, Lola Rock'N'Rolla (pictured with World Famous Bob) is taking the torch from John Waters and Lloyd Kaufman and using it to make her "gayploitation" films.
Like most brilliants, Lola won't spoon feed what's inside. Rather, she uses the ridiculous to convey her message with films like Night of the Living Gay.
Tonight, she has a triple feature at the Anthology Film Archives in New York City with Night of the Living Gay, Dragzilla and I Was a Tranny Werewolf. But first, I talked to Lola a bit about her films.
Horror films are sometimes morality plays, especially in the Friday the 13th series like the two people who have casual sex in the woods are the ones who get murdered. What is the message in the movie Night of the Living Gay? Are there similar messages in the other two that will be shown?
The message of Night of the Living Gay is that all of Manhattan is gay anyway, so why resist? The nightlife is better anyway.
Is there someone you'd like to work with in your next project?
I would love to work with Liza Manelli ... she's already a drag queen.
What are your top five favorite films?
My top five favorite films are Polyester, Shaun of the Dead, Evil Dead 2, Delicatessen, and the first A Nightmare on Elm Street ... Johnny Depp ... What a bloodbath!
What's your next project?
My next project is The Supermarket a horror/comedy about a demonically possessed grocery store that murders the inhabitants with various food ... shop til you drop ... dead! It's a feature budgeted at $200,000. (Brother can ya spare a dime?)
I am also working on the film version of the comic Hothead Paisan starring Drea DeMatteo ... (Brother can you spare 2mill?).
What inspires you?
I am inspired by really really loud rock music and the TV show Arrested Development.
What are you currently listening to?
I am currently listening to Them Crooked Vultures.
What are you currently reading?
I am reading How I Made 100 Films in Hollywood and Never Lost a Dime by Roger Corman.
Lola's films will be shown tonight, October 20, at the Anthology Film Archives at 8pm.
