With the first day of fall less than weeks away, it's time to start planning a scenic weekend drive to see the changing leaves in full glory. And you don't have to live in the Northeast or Canada to catch the vibrant reds and oranges. From California to New England, here's a look at the country's best spots for leaf peeping:

California
Sonoma County may be known for its wines, but it also has sweeping countryside views that showcase fall foliage at its best. The leaves start to turn in early to mid-October and last until late November. For something really fantastic, take in the scenery from the sky. Wine Country Balloons offers hot-air balloon rides providing unrivaled views of the famous redwood trees and vibrant fall leaves. Check AOL Travel for Sonoma area hotels.

Yosemite National Park is another great place to make your fall leaf pilgrimage. During the month of November, the park offers special Vintner's Holiday Packages which allow park visitors to enjoy wine tastings and gourmet meals at local vineyards.

Michigan
The state of Michigan has over 100 different species of trees, making for a very colorful fall. Leaves peak in early to mid-October in the Upper Peninsula, but in Northern Lower Michigan you can catch some good color through the end of October. Try savoring nature's bounty from one of the state's 64 wineries.

Colorado
The aspen tree is a big deal in Colorado. The state is home to nearly two million acres of these gorgeous tourist-luring trees, which turn to a radiant gold in the fall. The trees peak at different times in different parts of the state, so be sure to plan accordingly. In mid-September, Maroon Bells is very popular viewing spot. In mid to late September, Crested Butte and Telluride provide stunning views. And if you decide to visit Aspen, check AOL Travel for area hotels.

Arizona
You might not think that Arizona's famed "Red Rocks Country" would be a good place to spot fall foliage, but the Coconino National Forest is actually a fantastic place to check out all the colors. Spend an evening at L'Auberge, a luxury spa in Sedona that's close enough for you to see Coconino's vibrant forests and come home to the their first-class cuisine and spa treatments.

New York
The Adirondacks and Catskills mountains are New York's signature foliage destinations. The leaves in these areas peak in mid to late September. In the Adirondacks, Lake George is a popular resort town full of roadside attractions and waterfront fun. If you choose the Catskills, rent a cabin or airstream trailer at the funky Lazy Meadow Motel, located near Woodstock and run by the B52's Kate Pierson.

New England
New England is known as the best region for fall foliage viewing. There are stunning spots all throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island to catch the changing leaves. Vermont is a great place to enjoy awe-inspiring views while munching on fresh snacks on the Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream and Cabot Cheddar factory tours. If you're more urban than rural, walk through Boston Common, right in the center of Beantown, for all your fall foliage needs. And AOL Travel has a great list for Boston area hotels.
