The last big three-day weekend of the summer is nearly upon us, and if you're in the same position as most of the country, you're finding yourself land locked for one of those ever-popular staycations.
... a museum. Every city or town has some manner of museum, and chances are, you've ignored yours. So why not take advantage of lighter crowds and hunt out the museum that best suits you? It doesn't have to be overly brainy, if that's not your deal. Even quirky museums – like those that focus on Pez dispensers, wax figurines or the largest collection of key chains – count. Find local museums.
... an art gallery. Just like the aforementioned museum, art galleries can sometimes be overlooked on a quest for fun. But why, when there's so much to see and experience? And if art's not your thing, maybe you can turn the experience on its ear and attempt to find the strangest, most disturbing or ugliest art in town. Find local art galleries.
... a new drinking patio. Your local haunt is awesome, no doubt. But sometimes changing your location can change your perspective – especially when it comes to knocking back a few. So rather than hunkering down at your usual watering hole with the same people you always see, trek about for a new option. And while you're meeting new people and checking out new scenery, why not try a new drink while you're at it? Find local night spots.
... a shore. Whether it be a beach, a lake or a river, it all counts. If you don't have any shores handy, check out a local public pool. You could always consider sliding up to the pool at a nearby hotel as well. As long as you look like you know what you're doing, it's unlikely anyone will make you leave. What better place to take a folding chair and that book you keep meaning to finish? Well, except maybe ...
... your backyard. Yeah, it may be right there, but admit it – you ignore it. You take it for granted. You haven't dealt with your garden in so long that there are headstones in your rose bushes. Whatever you plan to do in your backyard – spruce up the foliage, create a mock slip-n-slide, grill various meat products – make sure you plan to do the most important thing. Have a nap in the sun. Preferably in a hammock, if you can swing it. Just don't forget the SPF.
