When the Berlin Wall came down, it was a symbol of freedom. to contain Can a TV commercials for beer have the same effect in North Korea?

It appears that the country that has such disdain for the western world also likes to kick back with a cold beer at the end of the day. Television is state run in North Korea where ads are rarely shown. A beer commercial in a communist country seems like a something unheard of. Thank goodness some folks in South Korea were able to get a copy of this ground breaking ad.

The commercial looks more like an infomercial as it clocks in just shy of 3 minutes. The soundtrack plays like something right out of the circus with a heavy xylophone influence. I kept waiting for someone from the cast of Pee Wee's Playhouse to just out of the screen. Some images skirt the line between propaganda and soft core porn. How daring of you North Korea.

We get an eyeful in those few minutes as we are walked through the brewing process complete with scientists using test tubes. We see the boys and girls in lab coats finally enjoying the fruits of their labor. It culminates with women dressed in traditional garb serving men in business suits big frosty mugs of beer. Honestly, this commercial plays like like an Alfred Hitchcock movie. Every time I watch it I catch something new. My favorite part is seeing the picture of a thirsty factory worker holding up a mug of the refreshing beer that is called "Pride of Pyongyang." The ad informs us that this beer will help ease stress.

Tell me something I didn't know North Korea.
