There is nothing more American than drinking a cold one and grilling outside on Independence Day. Using beer as a marinate for beef and poultry has been around for years but why bother even pouring it out of the can?
Grab yourself a 12-ounce can of your favorite beer, with luck your cooler should be stocked for the 4th anyway. Pour out (drink) about 2 ounces of the beer and poke 2 or 3 holes in the top of the can. You can season the chicken anyway you like but the folks over at McCormick seasonings have an amazing recipe on their Web site.
Here is the part not for the faint of heart: clean out the bird's insides and stick the can into the cavity of the bird. Place the whole thing on the grill with the chicken's legs standing upright. Grill it between 325° F and 350° F for about 50 to 55 minutes. Now you have a tasty chicken and another topic to talk to your boring brother-in-law about at the family barbecue.
If you really want to go high tech, you can always purchase a beer can chicken holder. These wire devices hold the can in place and give the chicken a proper resting place on your grill.
If you look hard enough you can find them at your supermarket or a Target or Walmart. They can range anywhere from $5 to $54 (for a twin beer can chicken holder).
Go high tech or low tech, but enjoy your beer can chicken responsibly and Happy 4th of July from the Daily Drink!
