There was a time when getting a tattoo or piercing was extreme, radical behavior. Body art used to be hidden from society. But it seems in the past few years, the face has become an acceptable spot for a piercing or tattoo and no one hides them or feels ashamed anymore.

Today, there's a new total extreme when it comes to body art. Allow me to tell you about the Bagelhead. I wish I could say it is some new Hollywood horror movie but it is a body altering treatment all the rage in Japan called saline inflation -- and it's spreading to other parts of the world, too.

It all started in early 2000 with a book called "The Secret World Of Extreme Body Modification." Jerome Abramovitch was featured on the cover with what appeared to be a bagel under his skin. Much like the way saline is used in breast implants, saline is injected in the head or face (or hand or elsewhere) to distort the appearance. You can even place a dent right in the middle.

Check out the video below to see the procedure in action on some guy's hand. But be warned: watching saline inflation is not for the faint of heart -- avoid if you're easily grossed out!

Generally, after the saline is injected, people tend to look as though a large bagel has been implanted just under their skin. Sound weird and creepy doesn't it? Well not to the hundreds of people rushing to have this procedure done.

This may seem extreme to most but have heart, it only lasts for a single day. You can even color your Bagel with food coloring. For those of you who want to rush out and get this done, here are a few possible side effects: infection, skin stretching, headache and the temptation for others to toast your head.

All the videos of the procedure on YouTube seem to be coming out of Germany or other Eastern European countries. And it seems to be heading west. If it does catch on in the US, maybe it'll start in the alternative culture of New York City and slowly become mainstream like tattoos and piercings. Or maybe it'll just die out quickly -- the most preferred result.
