Bargrooves is a company that sells dance music for bars. Based in London, they offer CDs or downloads of compilation albums with titles like Summer Sessions, Bar Anthems, Over Ice, Disco Heat and Winter Warmers. More in the spirit of old-school KTEL records than NOW That's What I Call Music, these albums have definite themes. Unlike KTEL records though, these albums all sound the same. This is music that requires a velvet rope. This is music that is cooler than you.

A good DJ is hard to find - any jackass can play an iPod hooked up to a laptop - and even famous ones sometimes come up short. A good DJ worth their salt can set the tone and make the night fun for the patrons and profitable for the bar. Given the danger in jukeboxes, the next best thing are the Bargrooves. Bars can get DJ-style music without the cost of a DJ.

If a bar could afford a DJ, that DJ could spin some KTEL records. KTEL had better album names than Bargrooves. Although 20 years from now, Bargrooves may have some of the same appeal as KTEL albums do now with titles like Expressions: The Soft Sounds of Today's Rock, Electric Hits, Hot Tracks, Out of Sight, The Hot Ones, Wings of Sound, Reflections, Non-Stop Disco, 20 Explosive HIts.

Most of these albums had artists like ABBA, Rick Springfield, The Commodores, Irene Cara, Kim Carnes, Def Leppard and so on. The more descriptive albums were the country music records. They had names like Rip Roarin Country, The Touch of Country Love, Country Teardrops, Country Heaven, Country Sunday, Country Storytime, Kooky Kountry, Kooky Toones and Country Roots.

One of the best make-out records was put out by KTEL. Check out this song list of the album aptly named Sexy Country:
