Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hit movie theaters today as the first official summer blockbuster a) because it's officially summer and b) where as some of the other 2009 blockbusters failed due to being too apocalyptically depressing or too prehistorically goofy, Transformers hits a sweet spot between excitement, action, nostalgia and nerdicity. And the long lines at the midnight showing this morning seem to indicate that Transformers will dominate the box office.
It's interesting that a movie about aliens is released today since it's a busy day for alien lore. It's Flying Saucer Day which commemorates UFO sightings in the Washington's Cascade Mountains 62 years ago today. It's also interesting that it could have been one of these UFOs that crashed at Roswell just a few days later in 1947. The government recanted the original flying saucer crash story back then saying it was a downed weather balloon. It was also this day in 1997 that the U.S. Air Force released their report on Roswell, 50 years later, refuting all UFO claims.
