Diet trends come and go and can often be conflicting. In some diets, carbs are good and in other diets, they are the devil - a butt-bloating demon. Some schemes require only that one count calories while other schemes want you to drink jalapeno-flavoured beet juice on odd-numbered calendar days while singing a sea chanty in Pig Latin, while of course wearing Olivia Newton John-style legwarmers.
Now former obesity sufferer Matt Lisk from Summit, N.J. is pushing The Burrito Diet, not a misprint ... THE BURRITO DIET. I don't care about the claims or the results, but if there's a diet that involves burritos, I'm in and I think that's something America can get behind.Claiming the Burrito Diet helped him lose 80 pounds in eight months, Matt developed the regimen after an emergency room scare.
"The doctor walked in and told me I had developed adult-onset asthma, high cholesterol and sleep apnea," says Matt. "When he told me it was time to lose weight, so I could be there for my wife and son, I knew it was time to take action."
Matt also says ingredients for burritos are versatile and they're good for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The secret to the Burrito Diet success is portion control. So if you're thinking of Chipotle-sized logs of spicy burrito goodness, think again. But a burrito of any size beats cardboard-flavoured protein matter recommended on other diets. Plus the fact that these burritos are handheld gives them a naughty fast-food feel.
You may remember Jared Fogle and the massive Subway advertising budget that turned the non-traditional fast food diet craze into a world-wide phenom. Matt doesn't make any comparisons but they both, and here's the Burrito Diet catch, require some physical activity. Jared walked to the Subway stores and in his book, Matt has included a 'reasonable' and 'proper' exercise regimen to reduce body fat.
So the burrito is still not the magic bullet to go from obese to lean (damn you physical activity), but it's not a bad way to go.
