We've reached the season of scary things lurking around corners, ghostly sounds echoing through dark rooms and fears coming to life. It's the Halloween season and Haunted Houses are making a comeback once again this year. AOL CityGuide has the best in the nation but we're gonna break it down by city: New York City.

The New York area has some of the most creative haunted houses in the country. And actors from all over the country are hand picked to portray terrifying characters that will keep you awake at night. Check out these ten haunted experiences for some chills and thrills!

10. Van Cortland House
Step into this Bronx house to take the tour of the haunted basement if you dare. It's dark in this old house. And you may not be able to see all the danger lurking just around the corner. But give it a try if you want to get a chill. Listen to the scary stories and take cautious steps along the haunted walk.

9.
TerrorDome
Maybe Newburgh, New York is a bit further outside of the city than you'd like to venture or perhaps TerrorDome is too much haunted house for you to take. But if you can stand the quarantined "Killer Kampground", maybe you're brave enough. These campers are very sick and they're after you. Stay healthy and you'll find yourself in the horrifying Barn of Terror.

8. Skull Island Scream Park

If you dare to travel outside of the city, head to Fishkill, NY to find the mysterious island which has recently reappeared. Step onto the island and you'll find yourself amidst the frightening killer clown carnival. And if you can manage to escape those insane clowns, climb through the caves and encounter blood-thirsty zombies. If you're bitten, you'll be thrown in quarantine with merciless, chainsaw-wielding medics.

7. The Beacon Screamery
An old asylum is causing a shockwave through the Hudson Valley. Paranormal experts have been called in to investigate some eerie reports of mysterious happenings inside the walls of this asylum. She still walks the halls of this house though and the proprietors invite you to get a glimpse. Ghost tours will be given October 24, 25, 29 and 30. But come on Halloween night to witness a ghost storyteller recount his experiences with the house. Maybe Gertrude will attend.
