It has been the subject of songs, the impetus to a plot twist in romantic comedies, the centerpiece behind the bar and the cause of so many hangovers. But tequila remains one of the most effective liquors in a bartender's arsenal. And every drinker knows that a shot of tequila, though slightly more complicated than any other shot, may be the most fun you can have in a bar.

The three part process of shooting tequila involves salt, tequila then lemon wedge. The salt is licked, the tequila is shot and then the lemon is sucked on. Some beginners tend to mix the steps up making for very poor results but they get the hang of it after a while.

Another thing that makes tequila so lovable is their part in the margarita. The margarita is generally made with tequila, triple sec and lime juice but it takes a steady hand to mix these cocktails up just right. Head to a Mexican restaurant or bar to make sure that you find someone who knows their way around a bottle of tequila. Or try making one yourself but go easy on the tequila.

Many restaurants also offer tequila tastings, just like you might find wine tastings at a wine bar. Agave in New York City lists their tequila flights on the menu and Hugos Restaurant in Houston, Texas is another restaurant with a tequila menu.

If you're interested in tasting some tequila, check around with the bars or restaurants in your local area. Or simply pick up a few new bottles and invite some friends over for your own personal tequila tasting.
