In Munich, Oktoberfest starts in late September and runs through early October. But over here in the States, we celebrate the festival on our own time.
Some cities, like Denver, Colorado or Fremont, Washington follow Munich's schedule but many others wait until it's officially October to really start partying. And quite a few OktoberFest in the U.S. are still going strong.
If you missed Oktoberfest in Germany and even a few in this country, you've still got a chance to try some bratwurst and beer. Check out our list of the top Oktoberfests still partying on across the nation.

Oktoberfest is a lot of fun. Anaheim, Ca has a great one with lots of beer, food & venders. I now live in Colorado and Woodland Park, Co has a small one that isn't too bad, but I have yet to get to the one in Denver. I have heard that Oktoberfest is about as close to Munich as you can get without the expense on flying to Germany.

Largest in the US is actually in Milwaukee-GermanFest. Always the last weekend in July. This doesn't include several smaller ones in October. Milwaukee also is developing a new German-area downtown around Old Third Street. This includes Mader's Restaurant, Usinger Sausage, and the new Old German Beer Hall, which copies a Munich beer hall and only sells HofBrau. :-P Waitresses dressed as St Paul girls! Also, in August, Toledo Ohio has one of the oldest, which is over 40 years old!

I agree with Cincinnati.. 500,000 people attend each year.
Cincinnati also has a strong German history. In 1900, there were five daily German language newspapers and German was the required language spoken in schools. Anti-German sentiment during WW1 led to changes. Still, many of the city streets have two signs..their original German name and their Americanized one.

Here in Ohio, The Oktoberfest started Sept. the 28th. one day only! And it was all about crafts, some clothes sales, a few food benders, no beer. One day only. To me, all this was like one huge yard sale. Too expensive for my taste. All I bought was a braclet and a necklace. I bought my eight yr. old daughter a braclet, hair scrunchies that had her school's name on it,a cinnamon home made small snowman for her tiny Christmas tree we put in her bedroom, an Indian's tent we stopped by and she wanted a wooden 5 piece, I guess it is a whistle like thingy? LOL.. fries, hot dog and a rootbeer. ALL of this for $65.00 I will not attend these anymore!! Nope.. never!

The Phoenix Club in Anaheim, Ca. has a wonderful Oktoberfest. It is a multiculteral club, but is mostly German folk. Authentic food and bier as well as a band directly from Germany. The festivities are held in the Festhalle (large permanent tent similiar to the one in Munich). On Sundays they have either roast pig or roast ox right off the spit !! Its open Friday and Saturday nights at 6 and Sundays at 10. Friday nights are free admission. Sundays there is lots to do for the kids as well....pony rides...jumpers and a playground. The club is located off the 57 freeway exit Ball road. SEE YA THERE !!!

Unfortunatly, Denver's Octoberfest seems like a non-event. Almost like they are just going through the motions. What happened?

We have been all over the United States and Canada to Oktoberfests. Some of our favorites have been in Frankenmuth, Michigan (Little Bavaria); Kitchener-Waterloo, Canada; Cape Coral, Florida; Boulder, Colorado; Ellsworth, Wisconsin; New Braunfels, Texas; and Ellis, Texas. We drink little beer, but the celebratory environment, peppy bands, and friendly people are refreshing in these cynical and stressful times.
